plural noun: remnants
-
1.
a part or quantity that is left after the greater part has been used, removed, or destroyed.
The age of the Australian landscape is incomprehensible, especially when I compare it to the time I have spent within the landscape.

This project displays a reflection on my experiences, time, and connection to the landscape. Located on Whadjuk Noongar Boodja, John Forrest National Park is a place which I spent a lot of time as a child, exploring, playing, and walking.

To create these works, I returned to John Forrest in an attempt to try and understand what I found, and still find, so captivating about this place and the Australian landscape as a whole. Scattered with remnants of Australia’s colonial past, the park consistently reminds me of Australia’s complex history.

A sense of place cannot be represented by just an image, it is a complex interrelation between the tactile and emotional experiences of the place. To rediscover this place, I utilised the practice of walking. Walking makes you aware of your own place within the landscape and allows you to gain a connection with the landscape. My work demonstrates an attempt to translate this sense of place as a microcosmic example of the experience of being within the Australian landscape as a whole. The print works I have created explore realistic representations of the landscape while my sculptural works attempt to convey specific experiences with John Forrest National Park.

At its base, my work is an attempt to explore what my place is within the Australian landscape while trying to communicate an awareness of the power complexity and age of this landscape.
